Movie Review

We Need to Talk About Kevin
I truly wish we did not need to.  “We Need to Talk About Kevin” starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra miller and Jasper Newell, is set in a typical, developed town in the current time.  This thriller leaves you wondering what is going to happen next after nearly every scene.
Eva, played by Swinton, is the main focus of this bundle of random scenes.  She wakes up one morning to find a spatter of red paint all over her front porch.  She begins cleaning and before you know it she is smashing tomatoes and throwing them in a joyous fashion.  We follow her throughout out the day having random flashbacks of her husband and of her son’s childhood.  Her little boy Kevin has problems with Eva right after birth.  He is continuously crying whenever she is within hearing distance and only stopping when his father, played by John C. Reilly is near.  This continues into to the toddler years when Kevin is in diapers and refuses to play ball with his mother.  He eventually drives his mom to a breaking point by emptying his bowels at a rather inopportune time.  He further frustrates his mother by using the toilet as soon as his father gets home.  As her day goes on, the scenes become more and more random.  After landing her new job Eva leaves with a smile and randomly gets struck across the face by a random woman.  At another point she is shopping in the grocery store, sees a different woman and immediately takes cover.  Eva later realizes this woman smashed all of her eggs.  As the movie progresses days go by, and flash backs continue to happen until Kevin is a teenager.  Throughout the flashbacks Kevin’s father supports Kevin’s archery skills.  He becomes accurate enough to shoot arrows into whatever or whoever he desires.  After the death of his little sister pet and an “accident” involving drain cleaner that his little sister loses her eye from, it is clear Kevin is not the innocent toddler his father remembers him as, and the little monster his mom has always known is now a big monster.   A rather creepy teenager played by Ezra Miller, overhears his parents talking about him and this drives him over the edge.
The acting in this movie was rather good.  Swinton played her character incredibly well.  Her slight smiles after being hired or her awkwardness at the work party just fit the character perfect.  As such did Ezra Miller.  The teen delivered his lines in as a troubled teen would, very sarcastically towards his mother, and at times a bit creepy. I believe that although John C. Reilly had limited lines, a little more participation could have made the movie a little more entertaining.  His performance in comedies like Taledaga Nights, and Step Brothers were outstanding and he fit the roles perfectly.  I just do not believe this curly headed, goof ball fit the role of a troubled child’s father.
The costume design was also very well put together.  Although her outfits and the outfits of others are very typical, that fit the bill perfectly.  The costumes made the characters feel like they were just a normal family, when really they were far from it.  Eva’s outfit in the tomato throwing scene also fit perfectly.  Although throughout the movie she is greasy, thin haired, and quite pale, in the tomato throwing scene she is young, short haired, dressed as a young person would be and just full of life.
The editing was atrocious in this film.  The plot had no backbone or support for the view to rest upon.  I was in constant free fall not knowing what the heck was going on for the first half of the movie.  In one scene Eva is happy, smiling just because she got her new job and just after she gets slapped by an old lady.  In the beginning of the film the jumble of random scenes does not give us an idea of Eva’s character.  One moment she is young, enjoying life, and in the next she is scrubbing her front porch.
This movie was a mental challenge to sit through.  You try to grasp what is going on in the current scene, and in the next scene, absolutely nothing occurs that has to do with the previous scene.  The movie does not build upon itself.  It is rather just a gathering of small clips that together are a thin plot with little purpose.  This film is valuable to those who enjoy being mentally challenged while they are trying to watch a movie.  The target audience is definitely adults with cognitive thinking abilities.  The film is great if you love to think and mentally strain yourself in your free time but for all the rest of us this is one of those movies that you may want to pass on.

The good ol memories of English 101

Ah my time in English 101.  Welllllllll it was awesome. Super spectacular.  I hate english with a passion.  I kind of know how to spell and I can get my point across on paper if I need to write it, but all this work just kind of stunk.  I am incredibly biased because off of my sheer hatred of english so I really would not take any of this to heart.  I actually did grow to like English a ton this semester.  No, I am just kidding, I still hate it.  English is a little better than reading though.  I hate reading.  Do you know what is better than English and Reading combined times a billion?  Fishing. Fishing is awesome.  So in my last tournament I had the worst start ever.  I picked up one pole and the lure was all knotted up in the line, so im like shapoobie. So I spend a good five minutes trying to get it undone but the line was taught and the lures hooks kept stabbing me so I gave up and just cut the line.  This is after there is blood all over my hands and pole for being stabbed repeatedly.  So I pick up my next pole.  It has my brand new spinner bait that I just bought from Cabela's.  I go to cast it and the line gets snagged and the line snaps and I lose my brand new fancy butt lure.  So I am livid now.  So I finally get everything tied back on and start fishing and what do i catch throughout the day?  Two bass.  O and the bass are like a foot long... so they do not count.  So I went through all that poop and only caught two nonkeeper fish. I woke up at four in the morning fished til 2 and all i got to show is wounds on my hand and two small sons of nutcrackers.  But you know what?  That day was still five hundred trillion times better than my English 101 experience.  But I do appreciate all the hard work and effort Meg puts into this class.  Although the class sucked and I hated it, I know to respect those who deserve to be respected so good work Meg and thank you. This is not sarcastic for the record, seriously.  And to all my blog readers, this is the last post you will ever read :'( so I made it way too long... youre welcome.

Project 4 Audiences!

For project 4 i am going to write to my mom and my girlfriend.  Lately I have been trying to convince my mom to get a bass fishing boat.  I have a fishing tournament this weekend and I am very excited.  I would be happier if I had my own fishing boat so I could be a boat captain rather than a co angler but oh well.  I am writing to my mom and my girlfriend because it will be easy to write in different styles.  Like to my mom I would write about how fishing is much fun and I could catch fish that she can beer batter and fry and serve for a wonderful dinner and also I wouldnt be a bother if I was out fishing.  To my girlfriend I would write that fishing is awesome and would be really romantic at sunset on a nice calm lake.  There are couple of ponds by her house and I cannot wait to fish them because apparently the ponds have never been fished before and its going to be so exciting.  I also plan on writing to my girlfriend because she has been picking for college but she pretty much has decided on Loyola.  I agree with her decision because Loyola is a wonderful medical school and thats what she wants to do.  Also Loyola is on Lake Michigan which I have never fished before.  It would be awesome to go on lake michigan and fish all the time.  I wonder what kinds of fish are in Lake Michigan.  Im sure theres like the basic fish, but I wonder if they have like a huge american eel or something crazy like that.  I wonder if an eel would even be a good fight though, they would have very little resistance since theyre so aerodynamic so I would be interesting.

More more fishing and the lion king

So I am pretty sure I have another fishing tournament this weekend and I am uber excited. When I went home for Easter I went to Cabela's, possibly the most wonderful place ever built.  I got lots of fudge with my wonderful girlfriend.  We got like 14 dollars worth of fancy fudge, rootbeer flavor, cookies and cream, grasshopper, and caramel peanut.  Grasshopper is mint chocolate chip so dont freak out thats just what they call it in the fudge business apparently.  So anyway I purchases some fancy hooks, and some rubber tube baits.  The tournament is in springfield and we get to stay in a hotel overnight.  I just hope we get enough boat for the whole team to go.  Since I do not contribute a boat, I am not certainly going.  If I dont end up going I am going to be rather upset.  In fact Ill be pissed.  So I hope I am able to go.  So ya if I come in super sun burnt on tuesday you know I was lucky enough to go.  Maybe Ill go get sunscreen at CVS before this weekend.  I got a hat and sunglasses, but I look like a doof with a hat and sunglasses on.  But whatever I just dont wanna get super sun burnt again.  It does give me more blogging material if i get burnt though.  I can not wait for the summer.  Fishing, listening to Tom Petty and the Lion King soundtrack. I just cant wait.  I really like the Lion King.  It is the best movie ever made.  Number two on the list would have to be the lion king 2 simbas pride.  The third best movie is lion king one and a half.  The best joke in that movie is when timone says et tu pumba after pumba says hes goin after simba.  This is hilarious if you know about caeser and his batrayal.

Actuarial Science

So my major is actuarial science.  I have been told by a professor that this is the hardest undergraduate degree in the university.  I disagree, I think it is English.  I could not stand writing all those silly papers and what not.  Just not for me.  So I want to be an actuary because i like math but i also like the money.  Making a lot of money will be a blessing and i plan on doing a lot of good things with it, like donating a lot to charities, scholarships, and stuff like that.  But do not get me wrong I am most likely going to buy a nice bass fishing boat.    Most people like the red fiberglass boats and thats usually how all the boats look, but i really like the blue ones.  I will also buy some fishing rods and reals, and a bunch of lures.  I will hopefully be doing a lot fishing when im not working.  Speaking of fishing, I may have two more fishing tournaments coming up and I could not be more excited.  One is in Springfield so were getting a hotel and its gonna be awesome.  I dont really know where the other one is, I wanna say Clinton but im not positive.  When I go home for Easter I will most likely go to Cabelas, the best store ever, and stock up on a bunch of lures.  I will also be doing some fishing over the summer.  I am also taking MAT 280 over the summer online so I hope it wont get in the way of my fishing.  MAT 280 is i think Financial Mathematics and covesr one of the professional actuarial exams that are hard as hell apparently.  I look forward to earning my degree in actuarial science and getting a good job to support a family and give to those who were less fortunate.

College Class

So the class that I am in currently that I find most interesting has to be linear algebra, MAT 175.  It is pretty difficult and a lot of work, but we learn some cool stuff.  A couple day ago in linear algebra I was talking to one of my friends.  We talked about why I was so sun burnt.  This was because I was fishing nearly the whole day last Saturday and neglected to wear sunscreen.  No I am peeling all over my face, neck and ears and I do not like it.  I was told that I should have put lotion on my sunburn everyday.  I ignored it and this is what I get.  We talked about this summer too.  I already got my summer job worked out.  I am working at a golf course kind of close to my house where I am part of the grounds crew.  I will be working from five to one everyday so that is going to kind of suck but it will be worth the money.  Working forty hours a week is going to be really nice. My best friend also plans on working there so it will be fun.  I plan on taking a couple fridays and mondays off so that i can go to our lake cabin up in Minnesota.  I love that place.  There is like no big cities so the stars are crystal clear. You can see like every star in the sky.  Sometime were lucky enough to see the northern lights too.  But anyways Linear Algebra is a fun class and definitely keeps me on my toes.  We learn primarily about matrices and stuff like that.  We have to prove like every single thing that we do.  it sounds terrible and it sometimes is, but you get to learn a lot that I will need to know for my future.  today my calc 3 teacher said, I like to use exams as weapons of mass instruction and i could not stop laughing.

Researched Topic

So my research project that I am doing now is about discrimination in auto insurance.  I am running into all sorts of problems.  The major problem being that I have a fishing tournament this weekend and really do not want to do the first draft over the weekend.  I have to be at the football stadium at 430 AM on a Saturday morning.  This is really going to suck and be problematic in my researching one way or another.  I will not have a lot of sleep so I will not be able to focus on writing the paper.  But anyways another problem I have had with researching is trying to decide which lures to use in the lake I will be fishing in.  Ill probably just put on a white spinner bait and hope for the best.  Dont get me wrong, in no way will this have an affect on my grade because even if I did not have a fishing tournament this weekend I still would have not done any research til last night and wouldnt start my paper til monday night around 7 anyways.  I have a serious problem with procrastination, but I will talk to you about that later.. (get it? its a pun) Another problem I had with researching was the sheer inclination of just not wanting to do it.  I despise writing academic papers.  at least with the other ones we were like creating stuff and writing about stuff we created and it was unique.  With this poop we have to basically learn about what everyone else thinks just to decide what we think.  I can tell you exactly how I feel about Insurance discrimination in about 20 words with the use of maybe one source.  I don't need 8 sources and over a thousand words to tell you how I what my stance on an argument may be.  But for some people they might need that much so good for them.
